A Thousand and One Nights: Storytelling in Arabic and World Literature

This course serves an introduction to the Arabian Nights (also known as A Thousand and One Nights), its cultural and literary milieu, and the history of its reception and resulting transformation as global literature. The overall aim of the course is to explore the literary origins of the Arabians Nights, the literary and aesthetic features of its stories, and the waxing and waning of the cultural importance of the Nights from its early beginnings in medieval Arabic literature until the explosion of its popularity in the early modern period.
