Master of Arts Graduate HandbookAdmission to the Graduate Program
Applicants for admission to the Graduate School must fulfill admission criteria established by both the Graduate School and the NELC Graduate Studies Committee. Information and application materials for admission to the Graduate School (including fellowship applications) and a copy of the Graduate School Bulletin may be obtained by contacting the Office of Graduate and International Admissions, The Ohio State University, 310 Lincoln Tower, 1800 Cannon Drive, Columbus, OH 43210. A student seeking admission for graduate work in NELC must first apply to the University Admissions Office not later than August 15, December 1, March 1, or June 1 for the Autumn, Winter, Spring, or Summer Quarter, respectively. Students are encouraged to apply several quarters prior to the anticipated quarter of admission. The Graduate Studies Committee decides whether or not to admit an applicant to the Department's graduate programs. Admission to the M.A. program is open to students holding a B.A. in a NELC language (or the equivalent) from an accredited institution. Since it is common in our field that students may choose to pursue graduate study in these languages late in their undergraduate careers, the Department also admits promising students with other undergraduate majors. In such cases, the Committee will specify areas in which students must make up for work not taken as undergraduates. Further information concerning the programs may be obtained by writing to the Chairperson, Graduate Studies Committee, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, The Ohio State University, 300 Hagerty Hall, 1775 College Road, Columbus, OH 43210-1340.
In addition to the admission credentials required by the Graduate School (ref: Section 4-3 of the GSH), all students applying for admission to NELC graduate programs are encouraged to submit scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination, as well as a sample of critical/scholarly writing. Applicants seeking a University Fellowship must arrange to take the Graduate Record Examination early enough to allow the scores to reach the Admissions Office before the deadline of January 15.
