The Weatherhead East Asian Institute of Columbia University invites applications for its 2005-2006 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Southeast Asian Studies. Candidates from all social science disciplines, including history, are welcome to apply. The fellowship will cover a 10- or 12-month period beginning July 1, 2005 or September 1, 2005. The Fellow will devote half time to his or her own research and will teach one graduate-level course per semester. The stipend for 2005-2006 is $41,000, plus benefits.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. degree requirements (completed and filed the dissertation) between July 2002 and July 2005. Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in a social science discipline, including history, working on modern Southeast Asia. Applications from individuals who hold or have held regular faculty positions will not be considered.

*Only one copy of each letter of reference is required.

All application materials (including letters of reference) should be postmarked on or before February 15, 2005. Faxed or e-mailed applications will not be accepted. Candidates may be invited for a phone interview. All evaluations of applications are confidential.

The award will be announced no later than April 30, 2005.

NEH Grants for Collaborative Research in East-Central Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Baltics, Central Asia, and South Caucasus.

The American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS and the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research (NCEEER) are currently accepting applications for the 2005-06 NEH Collaborative Humanities Fellowship.

Fellowships provide up to $40,000 for four to nine months of research in East-Central Europe, Central Asia, the South Caucasus, the Baltics, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova. Proposals must include plans to work with a least one collaborator in the field. The merit-based competition is open to all U.S. post-doctoral scholars in the humanities and most social sciences, including such disciplines as anthropology, modern and classical languages, history, linguistics, literature, jurisprudence, philosophy, political science, archaeology, comparative religion, sociology, and ethics.

The American Research Center in Egypt

The American Research Center in Egypt offers fellowships for research in Egypt for 2005-2006. Grants will be made in the areas of archaeology, architecture, art, economics, Egyptology, history, the humanities, Islamic studies, literature, Near Eastern studies, politics, religious studies, and the humanistic social sciences.

ARCE has available fellowships from a number of funding sources: The U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs funds fellowships available to pre-doctoral candidates and post-doctoral scholars for a stay of three to twelve months.

The National Endowment for the Humanities makes available fellowships for post-doctoral and professional scholars with a minimum stay of four months. One senior scholar is awarded the Scholar-in-Residence Fellowship designed to promote collegiality at the Center. Contact ARCE for more information.

Two short-term National Endowment for the Humanities Museum Curatorial Fellowships are available for 4 - 6 weeks each year for three renewable years, successive years (2005-2008) for full-time, professional museum curators. Applicants need not hold a Ph.D. Restrictions apply; please contact ARCE for more details.

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation funds the Kress Fellowship in Egyptian Art and Architecture, an annual prize of $16,600 including round-trip airfare awarded to a pre-doctoral student for dissertation research.

The William P. McHugh Memorial Fund provides the McHugh Award, a small grant given to a graduate student from any nation to encourage the study of Egyptian geoarchaeology and prehistory. Please contact ARCE for more information.

Fellowship tenure is from three to twelve months, depending on fellowship type, beginning October 1, 2005. Monthly stipends range from $1,530 to $3,369 commensurate with academic standing and number of dependents.

Round-trip airfare from the U.S. to Cairo is awarded to the individual fellow only.
