Job Description The successful candidate will be required to teach Arabic Literature, both Classical and Modern, at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to supervise postgraduate students working on topics in literature and related topics involving the Arabic language in the Department. It is also expected that the successful candidate will teach Arabic language courses at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will be a native or near native speaker of Arabic and English. The person appointed will be expected to take part in the administrative duties of the Department and to make a substantial contribution to our research activities. Time will be made available for research to be undertaken as appropriate. In addition to the teaching of Arabic language and literature the successful candidate may be asked to participate in teaching of such other courses as are offered at the undergraduate level. These include courses in Persian and Turkish language and literature as well as Islamic and Modern Middle Eastern History and Islamic Religion, all of which have consistently attracted a good number of students. At postgraduate level the Department offers supervision in a wide range of topics within the field of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies, and at present its postgraduate numbers stand at around 55 of whom about 15 are working on language and literature related topics. The Department, in collaboration with other departments, runs a very successful M.Sc in the Practice and Theory of Translation. The successful candidate will be required also to contribute substantially to this part of our activity by supervising postgraduate students, organising seminars, offering subject specific training in research methodology and by attending and contributing to all departmental research seminars. The appointed person will also participate in the activities of the Edinburgh Institute for the Advanced Study of the Arab World and Islam, whose membership is drawn from across the various departments and faculties in the university. The appointed person would also be expected to collaborate where appropriate with other departments, such as those concerned with Business Studies, Economics, Fine Art, French, Hispanic Studies, Linguistics, Politics, Religious Studies and Social Anthropology, with which Islamic and Middle Eastern studies offers joint Honours degrees. The successful candidate will be joining a staff comprising two Professors, two Senior Lecturers, four Lecturers and one Foreign Language Assistant in Arabic. In addition, the Department has five Honorary Fellows. The Department received a 5* rating in the last Research Assessment Exercise, the highest ranking in Middle Eastern Studies in the UK. It is expected that the appointee will contribute substantially to our research to maintain this standard. The topical and theoretical specializations are open, but preference will be given to applicants whose research and teaching complement the interests of current faculty.
